“The first time I ever performed on stage as an actor was as The Stage Manager in a production of Our Town performed by New Berlin West Middle School in March 2011. I was 14 years old, and I was in the 8th grade at the time. It was also my first time auditioning for any play or musical at all. What an auspicious debut. Now, almost 13 years later, I've appeared in many other school productions, as well as in many community theater productions in the Milwaukee area. I always look back very fondly at this play - although Thornton Wilder never intended this to be a sentimental piece, I can't help but think of it in such a nostalgic manner. If I continue to act 50 years into the future, my dream is to bring it all full circle by having Our Town be the very last play I ever perform in.”

From The Guardian review of Tom Lake…

"Luckily, there is the time for this. Tom Lake is set during the pandemic. Thanks to the lockdown, the Nelson girls are all at home helping with the cherry harvest; Lara’s story, told in daily instalments, will be better than any podcast at easing them through the long, back-breaking days. Patchett’s narrative, then, flips between present-day Michigan, and the same state in 1988, when Lara spent a summer not so far away at Tom Lake, where she starred opposite the young Duke in a production of Thornton Wilder’s Our Town – and, yes, as stories go, this one has pretty much everything…”

Bringing Our Town to His City: An Interview with Michel Hausmann

What inspired the creation of Our Town (Multilingual)? What made Thornton Wilder’s story the right fit for your company and community?

Michel Hausmann: Being an immigrant has its perks. For one, I didn’t have to read Our Town in high school like everyone else. I encountered it in my 30s and was blown away. Seriously, it might be the best play I’ve ever read. It stuck with me, and I knew I wanted to do something with it. But how do you bring something new to a play that’s been around, loved, and produced for over 80 years? Especially when there have been some spectacular versions, like Gregory Mosher’s at Lincoln Center and Cromer’s recent revival.
